Afcon Egypt 2019: Summary of the group stage.....by Jemea Teke Ndumbe


The group stage of the afcon saw a total of 36 matches played in all 6 groups.

69 goals have been scored so far with 26wins and 10 draws. The first round of matches recorded the most goals with 27, round three with 26goals and round two with 16goals.

The most number of wins was in round three with 10 wins, round one with 9wins and round two with 7 wins.


 Round two recorded the highest number of draws with 5, round one with 3 and round three with 2 draws.

Top scorers so far.

Adam Ounas(Algeria), Carolus Andriamahitsinoro (Madagasca), Mohamed Yattara (Guinea), Mickael Pote (Benin), Sadio Mane (Senegal), Emmanuel Okwi(Uganda), Michael Olunga( Kenya), Moh Salah(Egypt) , Cedric Bakambu(DR Congo) and Ahmed EL Mohamady (Egypt) have all scored two goals each.


 Host Egypt, Morocco and Algeria are the only teams to win all three group games, harvesting all 9 available points in their respective groups.

Defending champions Cameroon qualifies for the knockout face as runners up for the fourth time running. The last time Cameroon finished top of their group in the afcon was in 2006 in Egypt where they topped their group winning all three games.


South Africa, Benin, DR Congo and Guinea all qualified as third best teams in their respective groups.


Deputants Madagasca, Uganda and Benin are the surprise package in their year knock out face.

Kagawa Mondi, the charismatic play maker: who is he?

Mondi Kagawa is a professional footballer with the Cameroon professional football  league.  He currently ply his trade with Public works department ( PWD) , a division one outfit from the North west regional capital of Cameroon. The batibo native from Momo division, has been with PWD since 2014. A year after he completed secondary school studies at Government technical high school Bamenda, obtaining a baccalaureate in wood work. With PWD,  Kagawa is counted amongst the armada of players that helped the team in 2018 to get promoted to top-tier league.                  Ignatius Fon Echekiye  CRTV's famous sports commentator,  Ignatius Fon Echekiye is now one of the committee members of the international federation of football history and statistics (IFFHS).
