AFCON 2019: Cameroon vs Nigeria, the epic duel of good neighbors.... By Romeo Nkenyi and Jemea Take Ndumbe

Nigeria and Cameroon clash in the round of 16 of  the ongoing afcon in Egypt today,  Saturday July 6,2019 @17:00.

Nigeria needed a draw to finish top of group B but were shocked as litle known Madagasca defeated them 2-0. The defeat meant Nigeria will finish second in their group and will play the second place team in group F.

Cameroon for their part knew that a second place finish will set up a round of 16 clash against Nigeria and so needed a win against Benin. The lions however could only manage a draw terminating  second behind  Ghana in group F.

Many wonder why Ghana finished above Cameroon despite thesame goal difference and thesame points. The reason is simple Ghana scored 4 goals in three games and Cameroon scored 2goals in three matches.

Since independence, Cameroon and Nigeria have met 22 times with Nigeria harvesting 11wins; Cameroon ,4wins and 7draws.

The last time these two nations met was in the 2018 world cup qualifiers as Nigeria harvested 4 points from a possible 6 scoring 5goals in the process, Cameroon with 1point and scoring 1goal.

Cameroon so far are unbeaten in 9Afcon games(W4&D5) conceding just 1goal in their last 7 afcon matches.

Nigeria have lost just 1 game in their last 9Afcon matches(W6,D2&L1).

Both teams have met in the Afcon six times, Cameroon with 3wins, 1draw and 2defeats.

The last time these two teams met in the Afcon was in the quarter finals of the 2004 edition when Nigeria ended Cameroon's 12games unbeaten run from February 2000 to February 2004. Goals from Kanu and Okocha were enough to beat Cameroon 2-1 in 2004.

However it is worth noting that one of these two giants will not be in this year's Afcon quarter finals.

Nigeria have lost just 1 game in their last 9Afcon matches(W6,D2&L1).

Cameroon are defending champions while Nigeria lastly won the African cup of Nations in 2013 in South Africa.

Who will win between the eagle and the lion,  only the final whistle will tell tonight.

Nigeria have a prolific attack line but Cameroon has got all defense methodologies to stop any major attempts.
