Environment :5000 Dangerous Companies Exist In Cameroon, Government Officials say...by Ingrid Kengne

The minister of environment, nature Protection and Sustainable Development, Helle Pierre has declared that over 5000 dangerous and dirty companies are functioning in Cameroon.

He said this in Yaounde on the occasion of World Environment day commemorated every June 5.  According to the minister, the existence of these companies put the lives of citizens at risk.

However, efforts are being carried out by stakeholders to prevent environmental hazards. Some 1300 tons of non_biodegradable plastics have been seized from business persons, as a means to combat environmental damages. Minister Helle Pierre said  during a press conference in Yaounde on June 3.

This year's environment day was celebrated under the theme "Air Pollution". It is in this like that the minister said they are now working with the Standard and Quality Agency to lay down norms to regulate industries working with some dangerous substances such as benzene and Mercury.

He further said atmospheric pollution causes 7 million premature deaths every year in the world. He thus called on citizens to fight against pollution.

Environmental experts have been calling on the government to do something about the pollution caused by SONARA.
