Mohamed Diab scored the first ever afcon hattrick in the 1957 edition as Egypt beat Ethiopia 4-0 in the final.

Egypt's Hassan El-Shazly is the only player to score a hattrick in two seperate afcon tournaments. In the 1963 edition, he scored his first hattrick in a 6-3 win over Nigeria and in 1970, he scored his second afcon hattrick against the Ivory Coast. His expliots earned him a nick name " devastating shouter".


 South Africa's Benedict McCarthy holds the record of the fastest ever hattrick in the afcon history. He utilized 19 minutes to score his first ever afcon hattrick against Namibia in the 1998 edition.

Morocco's Soufiane Alloudi holds the record of the second fastest hattrick in afcon history as he utilized 28 minutes to score his hattrick against Namibia in the 2008 edition.

Egypt holds the record of most hattricks scored(1957,1959,1963,1970 &1998). While Ethiopia have conceded more hattricks in afcon history(1957,1959 &1970).

2019 will be the first time the afcon features 24teams, after CAF decided to expand the tournament as a way to enhance competitativeness.


Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o is the leading top scorer in the history of the tournament with 18 goals in 6 editions.

Egypt's goalkeeper Essam El Hadary became the oldest player to feature in the tournament at the age of 44years 21days in the finals in Gabon in 2017.

Shiva N'zigou of Gabon is the youngest player to ever feature and score in the tournament. He was 16years 93 days when he scored for Gabon in a 3-1 defeat to South African in the 2000 edition.
