Ghana :Black stars top scorer, Assamoah Gyan retires from national team.... By Jemea Teke Ndumbe


Assamoah Gyan announced his shocking retirement from international football on Monday May 20,2019. The 33 year old retires from  the Ghanian national outfit 32 days to Afcon.


This came at a time when he got information from coach Kwesi Apiah  that he will not play a key role in Ghana's Afcon adventure this year and was also upset with the decision to hand the captain armband to Andre Ayew.

"If the decision of the coach is to give the captaincy of the tournament to another player while am named in the team for the tournament, i wish to rescue myself from the tournament", Gyan said in an angry press statement on monday night.

"I also wish to retire from the national team permanently, not pretending my presence would fuel purported undermining the country has under my captaincy"

"I will continue to serve my country Ghana in other endeavors as a buisnessman through various investment". The words of Gyan Assamoah on monday night.

The 33 year old made his international debut at the age of 17 against somalia on November 19,2003 in the 90th minute. In 2006, he came in for Isaac Boakye in the 67th minute in the 2006 world cup qualifyer three days before he turned 18. He then helped Ghana to win the game and became Ghana's youngest goal scorer.

Gyan leaves the national team as all time top scorer with 51 goals in 106 appearances for the black stars.



Gyan also represented Ghana in three world cups(2006,2010 &2014) and became Africa's all time top scorer in the world cup with 6 goals over taking Albert Roger Miler of Cameroon with 5goals.


The BBC african player of the year 2010 also represented Ghana in the 2004 summer olympics and in seven Afcons (2006,2008,2010,2012,2013,2015&2017) and helping the black stars to finish third place in 2008, runners up in 2010&2015.

Gyan is remembered in Ghana for taking his nation team to the world cup quarter finals in 2010 as well as his celebratory dancing styles after scoring a goal.
