Economy : where have Cameroon's coins gone to?....by Gael Fabove
Coins have became very scarce in Cameroon than a 10000frs banknote .
Many people say it is as a result of gambling machines that coins are no more.Since most of the machines operate with 100frs coins.
This has really slowdown the economic activities in most towns. Business men are not able to sell their goods, due to the scarcity of coins.because it serves as balance.
Customers for their part are not able to purchase what they want all because of "lack of change" as they say.
"I had 500frs the other day.I wanted to buy bread for 200frs, out of that 500frs to eat.
But I went up to 5 different bread vendors, who did not have up to 300frs to give me back as my balance.
Some said I could only have balance if I bought bread for 300frs or 400frs.This is becoming something else...." Poufong Valler recounts.
This has resulted to another line of business which is selling of coins.
"To change a sum of 1000frs,one has to pay 100frs or give the 1000frs and receive back 900frs from the money changers..."he adds.
Not only the business people are crying but bike riders and taxi drivers and many others too.
Mr Roger is a taxi driver in Douala. He says
"I some times return home with little or no money, not because there are no passengers to carry.
But because the passengers are some time having 500frs or 1000frs banknote and since changing it to coins is very hard, I will have to continue my way with my empty car.
I carry only those whose money need no balance...".
Coins are hard to fine, up to the point that some people go to church on Sunday, purposely to change their money after the service from the offerings .
