Economy: Crisis in NWR, lead to drastic increase of Irish potato prices... ..by Ingrid Kengne

Irish potato, one of the most consumed food stuffs in Cameroon is currently witnessing an increase in price.

Santa, a subdivision in the Northwest region of Cameroon, is reputed  for cultivating Irish potato. But due to the socio political upheaval, cultivation has drastically dropped.

The unstable nature of the region has caused about 80% of farmers to flee for safety to other French speaking regions of the country.

A bag of Irish potato that used to be sold for 25.000frs, has now move up to 32.000frs. And a bucket of 1500frs is now bought at 2200frs .Both the vendors and consumers are faced with an in increased in price.

Restaurant owners are almost losing all their customers  due to reduction in quantity served for 1000frs .

Besides its expensive state, the murphy is harvested prematurely. This is due to scarcity. A considerable quantity is thus rotten upon arrival at markets.

The Anglophone crisis that began in 2016 and whose end is yet to be predicted, has helped in ruining the economy of Cameroon.
