07th may, world commemorates Masturbation, what is it?....Ingrid Kengne
The world Today Tuesday, April, 07 witnessed the 24th Edition of World Masturbation Day.
It aimed at creating awareness, conversation, acceptance of the often maligned act and to protect the right to masturbate. It was first celebrated in May 7 1995 by San Francisco sex shop.
The day was initiated in honour of Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, who was fired in 1994 by president Bill Clinton. This was because she(Joycelyn) suggested that masturbation be part of the sex education curriculum of students.
In the common parlance, masturbation is self stimulation of the genitals to achieve sexual arousal and pleasure, usually to the point of orgasm.
This act varies between youths of 12_49years. According to Mona Chalabi's publication of May 10, 2016, adults who are 25_29 years old are the most likely to have masturbated at least once in their lives.
But these numbers do not necessarily tell the whole story.
An old joke observes that 98% of people masturbate likewise the other 2% are lying. According to a recent study based on a representative sample of American adults, only 38% of women said they had masturbated during the past years. That of men was 61%.
People however masturbate themselves for diverse reasons. It could be to relax, to better understand the body,to release sexual tension, or a result of the absence of their partners. Some masturbate because it feels good.
Contrary to what many think, masturbation has a number of health benefits. It reduces stress, releases sexual tension, helps to sleep better, improves one's self esteem and body image. It equally helps in treating sexual problems, release menstrual cramps and muscle tension. It finally strengthen muscle tone in pelvic and annual areas..
Masturbation is normal, healthy and not something to feel guilty about, says medical doctors and sociologists. It has less adverse effects as compared to its health benefits. The negative claims have no scientific evidence so far.
Some claim that it leads to blindness, hairy palms, impotence in later life, erectile dysfunction, penis shrinkage, penis curvature and low sperm count..
It could also lead to decrease sexual sensitivity, infertility, mental illness and physical weakness. These effects are however mythical and subjective.
