Afcon Egypt 2019: Summary of round of 16,and quarter final fixtures...by Jemea Teke Ndumbe


 The maiden round of 16 of the ongoing afcon has come and gone as all eyes are geared towards the quarter finals.

A total of 19 goals were scored with 3matches ending on penalty shootout. A total of 33yellow cards and 1 red card have been brandished  in this phase of the competition.

Benin created  the first upset at the round of 16 when they eliminated 1976 winners Morocco on penalty shootout to set up a quarter final clash against Senegal. The game however ended 1-1 after 120minutes. The Squirels who have never won a game in the afcon found themselves at the knockout face through the class counsel mersy of the third best team rule.

Senegal beat Uganda 1-0 in a game pundits had given it all to Senegal. The teranga lions will be playing in their 8th quarter finals and have managed to win 5 lossing 3.


 Cameroon's nineth game unbeaten run came to an end as they were beaten by Nigeria 3-2. Goals from Alex Iwobi and Ighalo were enough to send the super eagles to the quarter finals. This will be Nigeria's 9th quarter final appearance and have 8 with the last being in 2013 when they beat Ivory Coast 2-1.

An 85th minute strike from Thembinskosi Lorch was enough for Bafana Bafana to eliminate 7time champs Egypt to set up a quarter final clash against Nigeria. This is the second time Egypt is hosting an afcon without winning the title. The last time they failed to lift the trophy on home soil was in 1974. South Africa have played in six afcon quarter finals recording 3wins in their previous five.


 Surprise package Madagasca booked their place at the quarter finals as they beat DR Congo after post match penalties. The game however ended 2-2 after 120minutes.

Algeria beat Guinea 3-0 to set up a quarter final clash against the Ivory Coast. Goals from Youcef Belaili, Riyad Mahrez and Adam Ounas were enough to see the desert foxes qualify for their 5 quarter finals in their history.

A Wilfred Zaha goal was enough as Ivory Coast beat Mali 1-0 to set up a quarter final clash against Algeria. This will be their 9th quarter final appearance and have managed to win five.

After recording 3 draws at the group stage, Tunisia booked their place at the quarter finals as they beat Ghana after post penalties. The game however ended 1-1 after 120minutes. This is Tunisia's 10th quarter finals recording 4 wins.

Sadio Mane(Senegal), Idion Ighalo(Nigeria), Adam Ounas(Algeria) and Cedric Bakambu(DR Congo) all have three goals each.
